I tried a Hiby player, but that was frustrating to say the least and this is now gathering dust. So I thought I’d up the budget and get this. To say I’m disappointed is an under statement. I really tried to like it, but the oversized volume knob is irritating as the slightest nudge means the screen is interrupted for a good few seconds. The unit is also sharp to hold on to. Rounded edges would have been comfortable, so why make the edges sharp? But the biggest disappointment is the user interface. It’s light years behind an old Apple iPod UI and is not a pleasure to use. Tiny text and unintuitive. I had visions of being able to explore my saved music in an inspiring and fun way, but this is not it. The sound is good, but not good enough for me to really want to continue to use it. I’ve benchmarked the sound of Apple Music, Spotify and Tidal on my iPhone and there is no difference. The UI of an iPhone, as well as the ability to display lyrics and biographical information, should you wish to, means that my trusty iPhone is a far more pleasurable experience. I’m disappointed. I will persist, but I’m not enjoying it. The reason for the confusion is because there's a very old version of Tidal that ships preinstalled with the SR35 (contractual agreement requires this is still on the device) and many people use this version instead of downloading the newest release v.2.80.0 from the services menu. Audiophile features that I’m not using immediately due to starting up with this Norma device. Coming from Apple and my iTunes library I’ve felt the growing desire to truly own the music I own and paid for to be heard on a device of my choice, not via an Apple product dictation and their software. You need to have basic file management awareness to get the best out of file transferring away from Apple if you’re doing the same exercise as me but it’s straight forward. 40+gb of iTunes library later and I’m enjoying christal clear music on this beautifully crafted piece of tech. I love the harsh angles and offset display that’s a design classic IMHO in this current saturation of bland mobile phone shaped alternative tech…… A great start regarding 1st impressions and I think worth the money when you look into the spec of the Norma and what you can expect to get out of it.
