I am sure shelled peanuts would work, but have no idea about the Yum. These are the best feeders I have used and the 15 gallon is much better size for the way I use them. Holds enough for at least a month. **Q: How long does the battery last?** A: 6 to 8 months. Have had it running year round for 2 years and only changed the battery a few times. **Q: can it be installed without the directional attachment?** A: Not advised. Work great IF you seal the spinning mechanism with clear silicone or install a small rubber gasket. If you fail to seal the lower unit, you will be cleaning it out every time it rains. I purchased the moultrie 6v battery and it will last all summer.
