It will help them "shed" the old outer layer of their nails. If you want a way to prevent scratching up things in your house: I suggest a cat tree with scratching surfaces and enough height to climb a bit as well as such things as the cardboard scratcher(s). I also use nail caps as they don't interfere with normal behavior (even climbing) but protect surfaces such as my leather couch. I have used nail caps on all of my cats over the years.
