I was a bit surprised by the small dimensions, though it is a very thick book. The first few months, our kids took it outside to use as a field guide for their "dinosaur expeditions." It got lost during a particularly engaging afternoon, and was slightly damaged from morning dew when recovered a week later. The fact that it was still quite usable is a testament to the quality of materials used to make this book. We bought a second copy so that each kid would have their own, and once again the small size proved an asset. They were each able to carry their book and and a steno book in their little backpacks during several visits to the dino exhibition at our local science center. By that time, they had memorized the page numbers of their favorite dinosaurs and had no problem finding the pictures of the dinos on display. The text is a little advanced for the pre-k through 1st grade crowd, but it's in small snippets that aren't too onerous for an adult to briefly read aloud. They didn't sell it, but Amazon did! The book includes just about everything a person (young or old) could want to know about dinosaurs, and the graphics are second to none, IMHO.
