Review: Fantastic on the Meze 99 Classics! - I wear my Meze 99 Classics for hours on end each day for work and found that my ears were getting a bit sore from touching the headphones because the stock ear cups were compressing so much. I wanted a thicker replacement and, having previous experience with Brainwavz on other headphones, purchased these and am super happy with them! I love the velour face so you can wear it comfortably for longer (though I personally never had an issue with heat or the original leather face, but still an improvement nonetheless) and the leather walls to retain the original sound signature. These earpads are about 1cm thicker than stock when put on the headphones and are, in general, bigger than stock and I find them to be perfect for me. They look like a loose fit but I can assure you that they are secure and will not come off with use. Fantastic replacement earpads that were a breeze to put on!
Review: Has The Benefits of Pleather and Velour - Comfort Is Top Notch - Totally Worth The Price - At this point the Brainwavz earpads are well known and well regarded in terms of comfort, quality, and sound. There are many reviews for the pleather and velour versions of these pads, which you can find here: Brainwavz HM5 Velor Memory Foam Replacements Earpads - Suitable For Many Other Branded Large Over The Ear Headphones - AKG, HifiMan, ATH, Philips, Fostex Brainwavz Replacement Memory Foam Earpads - Suitable For Many Other Large Over The Ear Headphones - AKG, HifiMan, ATH, Philips, Fostex There was also a post about those earpads on Cnet's Audiophiliac blog. I was looking into these to use with a newly purchased pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50x, which you can see here: Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones Basically, I was having an extremely hard time deciding between the velour and pleather options. On the one hand, pleather makes my ears sweat a lot, which is extremely uncomfortable. On the other hand, velour provides less noise isolation, and I intended to use these headphones almost exclusively on the go. Velour also reduced bass response compared to pleather. For me this was a concern, but a secondary one to comfort. I went back and fourth for a while, but eventually found this hybrid pair on Brainwavz website. They have velour where they touch your ears, and pleather on the inside (perforated) and outside. These are very similar to the earpads that Hifiman is using on their newer high end models, and they are called focus pads. In any case, these seemed like they would offer the best of both worlds for my needs, and were only slightly more expensive than the non-hybrid versions, so I bought a pair. I have to say, I am extremely happy I made this choice. As many others have noted, the difference in comfort is day and night. I found the stock pads on the ATH-M50x to be okay, but not very comfortable. They didn't fit completely around my ears, and they were relatively shallow, putting pressure on my head. The small pleather pads also made my ears sweat quickly. After only one day with the stock pads my Brainwavz already arrived so I switched immediately. The process of swapping the pads is not super easy, but pretty much anyone can do it with a little fiddling. With the Brainwavz on, my Audio Technica's easily became the most comfortable headphone's I own. Before the pads, they were only slightly (though still noticeably) more comfortable than my Monoprice headphones which cost less than $20. The Brainwavz earpads are nice and thick, and extremely soft. They really do feel like pillows on your head. The velour feels great against my skin, and the noise isolation is completely adequate for my needs. You still hear everything around you, but it's muted enough to enjoy the music. As for sound, I think most people make a slightly bigger deal about it than they need too. Yes, the sound is slightly different, but the difference is not huge. It is definitely not better or worse though, so whether you like it more or less is really up to your personal preference. As others have noted, the bass is slightly less strong. There is more room between your ears and the drivers with this pad, and the perforated pleather probably also softens it a bit. The drop in bass is only slight, and it isn't any less accurate. For me the Brainwavz pads also made the mids a little more smooth. Ultimately, YMMV. But the most important thing I can say about the sound is that you shouldn't worry too much about it (for what it's worth I don't know if the same can be said about the velour pads, I haven't tried them myself). Get these if you want to exponentially increase the comfort of your headphones. A short anecdote. I recently took these on a flight with me. The flight was delayed for 5 hours so we got on the plane tired from sitting in an airport. Then we found out the air conditioning on the plane wasn't working so it was extremely hot. The plane took off and I put on my Audio Technica's. (For those curious I was listening through a Fiio E17 connected to my iPhone digitally using Apple's Camera Connection Kit). After a few minutes, I was completely into my music. The pads blocked out just enough of the engine noise to let me hear my songs, and they felt great on my head. I listened for at least 2 hours straight, and despite the plane being extremely hot, and listening to my music relatively loud (to compensate for the engine noise), I was still feeling comfortable at the end. The velour kept my ears from sweating and the headphones didn't even feel stuffy! The sound quality was great and honestly, after that flight I knew 100% that I had made the right decision. Conclusion (TLDR): These are extremely satisfying earpads that will transform the comfort level of any headphone you put them on. Additionally, if you like the feel of velour but prefer the sound/isolation of pleather, these hybrid pads are literally perfect. It's totally worth the $25 I paid and I will recommend these to all my friends.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: will these fit on a pair of superlux 668b headphones?**
A: It should fit, but two cautions: 1. It's going to be tight. I slightly ripped one of my pads getting it onto my DT770. 2. I really don't like how they change the sound. They're not going to be good for the already-bright 668b's. Try the Shure SHR940 Velours instead; they're more the soft, snuggly, ear-enveloping kinda comfortable, so maybe not if you have ear cartilage issues.

**Q: Do these fit the Audio Technica M40X?**
A: Yes, these would definitely fit the Audio Technica M40X.

**Q: How do these fit on Audio Technica M50's?**
A: The brainwavz hm5 should fit the the ATH m50. I have th ATH pro500, which are smaller than the m50 and it fits fine. The ear pads are really nice. Definitely worth buying

**Q: Will these work with the sony mdr-7506?**
A: I cannot be sure if this would fit.If the stock Earpads of the sony mdr-7506 match the dimensions of the HM5 earpads, then these would fit.The Brainwavz HM5 Earpad's Dimensions are 110/90*75/65*28mm

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Comfortable but...
*by J***. on December 16, 2015*

My experience with these earpads have been a hate-love relationship. Despite their great comfort, it alters the sound signature of the ATH-M50X. I got these earpads for my ATH-M50X as the stock pleather pair had eroded. Installing them were very easy for me and it didn't even take 5 minutes. Pros: +More Comfort +Wider Sound Stage +Easy Installation +After EQ tinkering, sounds better than stock pads Cons: -Loss of Bass -Harsh Highs -Harsh Mids Comfort: These are very comfortable. They are softer and thicker than the stock pads that came with the ATH-M50X and they cover my entire ear. The previous pads didn't do this and just tip of my ear would have pressure after prolonged use. Comparing these with the velour pads on the Sennheiser HD598, the pads on the HD598 are more comfortable only because the texture of the velour is softer. If I were to sweat while dancing the HM5 velour pads would itch but not to the point of discomfort. The texture difference also have these as a dust magnet. This doesn't annoy me so it would not affect my score. Sound: Bass The bass absolutely disappeared with these pads. I read some reviews of other M50X owners who used it and they reported a slight change but in my experience the change is great. Mids The mids came forward in a large way from the 'V' signature it had before. Sadly it was too forward to the point of being harsh and it made the vocal of both male and female artiest to sound metallic. Highs Sibilance became a huge issue after putting these pads on. The highs became too harsh and made the listening experience very unpleasant. Sound Stage A good improvement. The sound stage widen up quite nicely and instrument separation became more transparent. This is the only 'out of the box' change that pleased me. Conclusion: I love how much more comfortable the ATH-M50X became with these pads. Although they are not as comfortable as the velour pads on the HD 598 (only by a texture difference), they are still a very comfortable pair. The sound signature was changed dramatically for me that made me consider returning them but with some tinkering I 'fixed' it. I installed Equalizer APO on my Windows 10 system that allows me to have a global equalizer across all applications. I have been able to bring the bass back and fix the other issues. The wider sound stage remained which I would say makes these headphones sound better than with the stock pads. Despite finding the right settings on the EQ, it is only on one device. I also have a Fiio X1 that I connect to the car as well and switching between EQs for the car audio, the ATH-M50X and the HD 598 is a hassle. I would only recommend these if you are willing to tinker with the EQ to fit your preference and don't have multiple devices or headphones to switch between.
