I'm far from an expert but many factors go into choosing like: is your tank freshwater or saltwater, do your fish need to burrow, do your fish like to sift the substrate, are you going to keep plants in the tank. Once you set up a tank, the substrate will probably be the hardest thing to change. Good luck! **Q: How much & big is 5 lbs?** A: I’ve bought about 5-6 separate 5 pound boxes.
