The newer clamp (I have a PP400 as well) is all black and far superior but needs carefully closing to not damage delicate items but in so many ways is better. **Q: Mine doesn't have the "elastomer band". Just opened plastic bag, nothing there. Is this usual?** A: I don't know whether it´s usual or not but when I bought mine from Amazon it had a rubber band attached to keep the clamp opened. (You close the clamp with the set screw). My rubber band is approx. 1,5" long and its cross section is roughly 1/32" by 1/16". Metric: 4cm long, 0.8m by 1.5mm cross section. It can easily be replaced by another rubber band and it shall be attached to the small knob in front of the set screw, wound around the bottom part of the clamp and attached to the knob again. I think that the cross section doesn't really matters, but the length of the rubber band does. If you have a longer band just fold it double and attach it as described above. The only thing that happens is that a thicker band keeps the clamp open with greater force. It comes with the adjustable jaws on one end and the spring clamp on the other, both attached.
