It works well for both purposes. I even used it for as an overnight travel bag and it was great. The one complaint I have is that after a few trips it started to look dirty from use. So I decided to hand wash it in the sink with mild detergent. And as a result the complete interior lining discolored and was destroyed essentially rendering the backpack useless. So I had to replace it with another one. Lesson learned here is that it's not submersible to clean. Afterward, I was disappointed to find that the outside pocket had water in the bottom and the paper towels were soaked. The main compartment fared much better, but the dampness from the outer pocket still got into the paper towels. Back it goes to Amazon. (This is the second one I ordered.
