It works without a phone as a simple rechargeable Bluetooth wireless thermometer, with the probe broadcasting to the base, where you can read large numerals on the base's screen. I don't need timers, alarms, graphs of temperature over time, grilling history, cellular connections across town, or other features the app provides. I do like the dual temperature readout from the probe, which shows both internal temperature of the food, and the internal temperature of the grill. It has a strong bluetooth signal, which works from the probe, through the thick steel walls of a smoker to the base. I have never lost the connection, but I keep the base within about 20 feet of the probe. A wired probe, an instant read digital thermometer, or even a mechanical meat thermometer would work just as well I suppose. (By the way, I have not found mechanical thermometers to be as inaccurate as books and the internet would suggest.) This is obviously more product than I need. I got it when my cheap big box digital thermometers failed quickly. So far, no problems.
