Mastering Audio: The Art and the Science

An excellent book with clear technical details and practical guidance on the mastering process. There is everything from ear-training, tips on plug-in use, the use of outboard electronics, the industry standard software and the reasons for using it. The author explains what the effect of outboard units, lossy and un-lossy file compression and bit-rate have on his perception of quality. It is full of advice on how the mixing process feeds into the mastering and on to the pressing/streaming service together with the best practice for everything from documentation of masters and mastering, the preparation of masters for the various pressing and streaming services and the backing up and archiving of master files. If you suspected that mastering was achieved by the careful application of smoke, mirrors and snake-oil then this book will put you right. It might also save you some embarrassment when you send off your latest home studio mix.

Bob shares his wealth of knowledge which is invaluable to an ambitious sound engineer. Make sure you have top of the range decks in order to achieve his results.

Good for an in depth technical review of the mastering process. Ie. Album sequencing, bitrate, sample rate conversion, etc. However isn't doesn't contain many practical tips that you can apply to your masters

CDで音楽を聴いていると、なぜか疲れる。好きなアルバムでも全曲聴き終わる前に消したくなってくる。何となく耳が疲れてきて、静けさが欲しくなる。きっといくつかの理由があるのだろう。「ラウドネス・ウォー」という言葉がある。音楽メディアの主流がCDだった1980年代後半から2010年代中頃までに使われた言葉だ。この「ラウドネス・ウォー」が、CDを聴いていると疲れてくる理由の一つのなのだと、このボブ・カッツの書いた「マスタリング・オーディオ（第3版）」の17章を読んで分かった。以下、この本のこの部分の要約と私なりの解釈です。 マイケル・ジャクソンのヒット曲「ビート・イット」が初めてCD化されたのが1982年で、4回目にCD化されたのが2009年だそうだ。CDの場合、再発の際に同じ音源を使わずに、少し変えて（リマスター）出すことが多い。それでは1回目のCDと4回目のCDで何が違うのか？その違いを書く前に少し説明が必要だ。 音の大きさを表す言葉として、一般的に使うのはボリュームという言葉だ。「テレビのボリュームを上げる」といった使い方をする。テレビで映画を観ている時､会話がよく聞こえないのでボリュームを上げると、その後に戦闘シーンが始まって慌ててボリュームを下げるということがよくある。この映画全体としての音の大きさは、どのように表すべきだろう？映画全編の音声の平均値を測定すればよいのでは？音楽の場合、曲全体の「音量」を表す値としてプログラム・ラウドネスというものがある。これは単なる平均ではないが、似たような考え方で作られたものだ。 このプログラム・ラウドネスを使ってマイケル・ジャクソンの「ビート・イット」の1982年版と2009年版を比較すると何が違うのか？1982年版のプログラム・ラウドネスは-18.28LUFSで、2009年版は-7.35LUFSだそうだ。LUFSはプログラム・ラウドネスの単位で、デシベル（dB）で表す。つまり2009年版の方が音が大きくなっている。どれくらい大きいかというと、10.93LUFSなのですが、これだけではよく分からない。デシベルは対数を使った表現なので、これを真数で表すと約3.52になる。つまり2009年版の「ビート・イット」の方が1982年版よりも約3倍音が大きいことになる。人間の聴覚は、音の大きさを直線的に知覚するわけではないので、3倍と言っても耳をつんざく大音量ではない。また、このプログラム・ラウドネスは、前の説明に書いたように平均的な音量だ。その曲の中の最大音量（ピーク）が変わるわけではない。一般的にロックの曲で音量が大きいのはドラムかエレキギターだが、その大きい音がさらに大きくなれば、すぐに気がつく。しかしプログラム・ラウドネスを上げる場合、大きな音（ピーク音）は変えずに、小さい音を大きくする。いわゆる「コンプレッサーをかける」というやつだ。このやり方だと目立たない形で音量を上げることができる。 プログラム・ラウドネスを上げたCDの方が当時は売り上げが良かったようだ。そして競うようにして音量がどんどん上がっていった状況を「ラウドネス・ウォー」と呼ぶそうだ。その背景には、ポータブル音楽プレーヤーの登場により、電車の中のようなうるさい場所で音楽を聴く需要もあったようだ。私がCDで音楽を聴くと疲れる理由は、このプログラム・ラウドネスと無関係ではないと思われる。「音量が上がり過ぎているのであれば、CDプレーヤーの音量を下げて聴けばよいのでないか」と思うかもしれない。しかしプログラム・ラウドネスを上げた音楽を音量を下げて聴くと迫力がない。なぜなら、ピーク時と通常時の音量の差が小さいため、起伏の乏しい平坦な曲に聴こえてしまうからだ。 ちなみにCDが登場する以前のアナログ・レコードの時代、なぜラウドネス・ウォーが起きなかったのか。アナログ・レコードでは、プログラム・ラウドネスをCDみたいに上げることができない。なぜできないかというと、アナログ・レコードの音はレコード盤の溝という物理的な形状によって作られている。そこに一定量以上の大きな音を刻むと、再生時に針が飛んでしまうのだ。 そして、2020年代以降、このラウドネス・ウォーは終わりを迎えたと言われている。なぜなら、今やCDの時代は終わりを迎え、音楽は配信の時代となった。音楽配信では、ラウドネス・ノーマライゼーションという技術が導入されている。この技術は、曲ごとの音量の違いを自動的に調整する。つまり、頑張ってプログラム・ラウドネスを上げた曲も上げない曲も、配信で聴くと同じくらいの音量に聴こえてしまう。これは前に書いたCDプレーヤーの音量を下げて聴いた時と同じ状態で、プログラム・ラウドネスを上げた曲の方が起伏の乏しい平坦な曲に聴こえてしまう可能性すらある。 以上、ラウドネス・ウォーの勃発から終戦に至るショート・ヒストリーでした。個人的には、この話を知って少し胸のつかえが取れた気ががしました。詳しくは是非この本を読んで下さい！

Even if you don't mix and master your own tracks, this book is filled with so much useful information that you will get a lot out of it, whether you are a beginner hobbyist or advanced professional audio engineer. I thought that I was a relatively advanced user but this book has made me rethink a lot of assumptions. I can clearly hear the difference in my own productions after just reading a few chapters of this book. While this book is ostensibly about mixing and mastering, it really covers the whole range of essential audio processing tools in-depth without any filler. Any DAW or other audio tooling user should have this book on their shelf. The wide format makes sense, but it is a bit awkward ergonomically sometimes. The binding makes it a bit difficult to lay the book flat. I have considered rebinding the book with a spiral. But this is the only place where there is any room for improvement.

This is an excellent book. Detailed explanations and lots of great experiences to help every home recording artist, regardless of level of experience or knowledge of the art of mastering
