They fight fires with Rock'n'Roll, capture spy satellites with a minivan and communicate with animals using pee, yes Pee! Written for middle school readers from 9 to 14 years old, The Whiz Kids from DARPA is a graphic novel that shows the first 10 stories of a group of young teens who go on funny missions and adventures using Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to save the day. The group is also an example of diversity, comprised of an Asian American physicist on the Autism spectrum, a transgender computer hacker, a Hawaiian born African American weapons engineer, a Latinx linguist and former spy and a biologist who also happens to be a talking bear! Review: Brainy Little Bodies, Big Ideas: DARPA's Whiz Kids Will Make You Yours Love Science Again - Imagine cramming a PhD's worth of brainpower into a kid who still gets excited about recess? โ That's the ingenious trick Ramon Gil pulls off with Whiz Kids from DARPA. By shrinking his adult scientists down to their childhood bodies, Gil gives readers the best of both worlds: the wide-eyed curiosity of youth and the intellectual firepower of seasoned experts. It's a narrative cheat code, and it works brilliantly. Each adventure drops this pint-sized powerhouse team into a genuine scientific mystery, and watching them crack it feels less like homework and more like a heist. Young readers can actually see themselves in these characters, which is half the battle when you're trying to get kids genuinely hooked on science rather than running from it. And that's where Gil's masterstroke lands: instead of lecturing young minds into glazed-over submission, he lures them in with page-turning puzzles. The science isn't the obstacle โ it's the reward. By the time you've solved the riddle alongside the team, you've learned something real without ever feeling like you sat through a lesson. Didactic teaching? Boring. Scientific adventure with a twist of age-bending genius? Now that's a curriculum worth signing up for. Review: A Graphic Novel full of Science, Heart, and Humor - The Whiz Kids from DARPA is a fun exploration of science in its many forms, with characters you can easily grow fond of. Itโs about a diverse group of young scientists, one even takes the form of a bear, that make-up a trusted organization called DARPA, solving scientific anomalies or problems through situations, clear explanation, and clever, funny banter. It had me chuckling out loud a lot! Some of the stories delve into moments of the heart. Itโs such a fun graphic novel for kids who love this format of storytelling, science, and adventure.

A Mix of Fiction and Science Facts
What I like the most about this book is that at the end of each short story, there's a convenient QR code that leads you to more information about specific scientific topic/s discussed in the story. It's a perfect way for those curious about the subject to dive deeper and explore, making the reading experience even more enjoyable and enriching!

Made Science Cool!
I was going to gift it to my niece but liked it so much, I kept it for myself and ordered another one for her. Iโm a big science nerd and love the snappy banter between the kids. There were also a few stories with lots of heart. Highly recommend for budding little science geeks like I was!

Great book
I was worried an educational graphic novel might feel, well, too educational. But this magically blends adventure, humor, and learning with wonderful artwork. It brings science and math to life in such a fun and creative way. Has made a really great gift.
