It could be used for close range self defense but the short length makes it somewhat less desirable. I'd prefer at least five feet for close range, but this is definitely better than nothing. Weight and balance is great for throwing but some people who are not very athletic may find the blade a bit heavy- I have read reviews saying as much, but the weight is good for me. My main purpose for this is I'd like to have a spear when going out on a kayak in case a shark or gator gets aggressive with me at least I'd have some kind of weapon. The problem with using this spear on the water is it short for the purpose of stabbing and if I throw it I'm out $70 (and there's a good chance I could miss). So I ordered a six foot spear as well. But I'd like to see an option to buy some cheap throwing spears that are cheap enough you don't have to worry about losing them. Maybe get five of them for $50 or something, have small blades at the end instead of the heavy duty blade. Would be something good to add to the collection but I haven't seen anybody selling those (other than some affordable arrow heads but you have to make the spear yourself). Some four foot spears like this with a small cheap blade at the end sold in a bundle for using once or twice. I guess at that point I might as well get a bow and arrow or something but the spear is way easier to use quickly in a tight space and more fun to toss around. Review: Good Woods Walker - Good pokie stick for mountain lions and wild dogs or anything else you may encounter. Better than a stick but might just piss off a bear unless you aim real good. Seems well made and uses a decent 2Cr-13 steel. Nice weight and easy to throw for fun. Maybe too short for spear fishing but I will still give it a try. For those who complain about the edge sharpness, it's a spear not a Ginsu knife. It's designed for thrust and penetration not slicing tomatoes or peeling potatoes! Yes you can put a sharp edge on it but why? Use it for what it is designed for and it will do well. Thickness of blade adds to it's sturdiness and the shaft material is similar to the stuff Cold Steel uses if not the same. Useful and fun, and not a toy.

Britney and I are getting along great!
I named my spear Britney because I’m rad. I bought it because I walk my dog in my yard and we have woods where I’ve seen a black bear before. I just want it to keep space and make pain for the bear to maybe drive it off. So far no bear sightings since I got it, but I use it in a pinch to cut overgrown plants. Quick 1 foot strikes work best and with cleave something right in half if you sorta snap your wrist so to speak. Throwing it is not practical. At least when I’ve tried it it is not. It tends to tilt in the air as if the point itself isn’t heavy enough to naturally lean down. Overall though it’s a great tool in an instance where best mace isn’t feasible. The cool part is it’s low key and looks like a walking stick with the sheath on. Quality product.

Good value but...
Wish it were 6 inches longer, would work better for my intended purpose as a walking stick with a point for dog packs in the back country. That being said, overall it seems pretty solid. Pros: Good value Solid construction Shaft is not round, which makes for good indexing of the blade orientation in your hands. Blade looks to be well made and finished for a cast piece. (Forged steel is stronger) Rubber sheath that's tight and solidly attached, but comes off pretty easily if you want it to. Cons: Shaft is slightly curved, but not enough to screw up your "aim", if you get my drift. Shaft is not round, which means it can flex in one plane. Blade is *almost* sharp. It's OK if your intent is strictly thrusting, but for better efficiency as a weapon you'll want to sharpen it with 3-4 minutes on a grinder. As you can see in the pictures there are 2 open holes in the blade. Having those closed up would make me feel more comfortable that the blade is sturdy enough for self-protection against animals, especially since someone mentioned in another review that they had chipped the blade, though they didn't describe the usage that caused it. I really don't see the purposed of the holes. Maybe I'm missing something... I'll do some light testing over this weekend and if I find anything noteworthy I'll...note it.

Well build and functional
Often times I am not sure if it is going to be something to go with a costume or a real weapon when you buy online. I am very pleased to say this is a well made, well balanced spear. The blade is very sharp and it looks amazing! The handle has a great grip on it also

Can’t beat for the price!— edit: after 1 year review
This thing is extremely durable. It has been thrown into a tree approximately 60 times and still is great. Actually, I have bought two of these and they are both holding up very well. I would recommend for anyone that has someone in their life that likes throwing spears or just to have them hang on the wall. The pictures that I posted are after being thrown quite a few times into hard trees. You can see that it still looks great and is quite durable. A year and two months later is the last photo. This has been extremely durable and thrown hundreds of times !!! Would recommend over and over. I have one son that is a martial art guru and one that is avid marksman and knife/spear thrower. These have been put to the test and passed with flying colors!! They won’t break easy and are got for hunting or just throwing. Never regretted either spear I bought.

Great quality
A lot better quality than I was expecting, this thing is heavy duty. Comes razor sharp. Would buy again!

Great spear!!
I have had bad experiences with spears before, as the tips often break off. This spear however, is very thick. It doesn't allow for the best penetration, but it is very sturdy. I have some tough bags stuffed with shrink wrap to throw them into, but when I missed and hit wood, the spear held up very well. I have been throwing this into wood for a while now, and there are no dings, scratches, rolls, chips, or anything else. The only bad things about this is that the sheath clip doesn't stay clipped, but that's not such a huge deal. Also, it is a bit expensive, but you get what you pay for. Junk on MTech for a few bucks equals crap, but more money equals a good sturdy spear. I definitely recommend this.

Very good spear
Got this spear to throw at a block of wood. Good weight, sturdy, good length, so far has yet to break, despite being thrown at a large chunk of wood, many times, many times badly. Despite the weight of the spear, the tip has yet to snap. It looked like it would, given how pointy it is. My throwing knives have broken with thicker points. but the tip is actually quite thick (tapering into a point ofc), so it can support the weight of the entire spear. Can't recommend it enough for throwing.

The best bang for your buck
This is the most durable spear I’ve had and it comes pretty sharp too. I’ve smacked and slashed it at multiple things and shows no signs of damages. The bolts and everything on this is real and actually does support it. The spear was slightly shorter than I expected but again the durability makes up for it.

most amazing weapon I own.
I was not sure what to expect but WOW!!. . This is the most amazing spear I have found. The durability and good quality metal puts it over the top. I have had a lot of throwing blades but this tops them all. First couple of throws were off, the third stuck right in to the stump I was throwing it at. Love the length, could be a bit longer but over all i'm very happy with the spear. Well done.
