Review: If ur a new Breastfeeding mom & the baby needs supplementation this is the BEST to protect BF - This is not an item easy to use out of the box for anyone, BUT when ur taught how to use it efficiently, it is the BEST product IMO for protecting breastfeeding (BF) & the BF latch. Bad reviews say the catheter tubing doesn't stay bc it's flexible & it's frustrating. That's true & one reason a person needs to be taught how to use this. I was a Post Partum RN & Lactation Educator Counselor & once I was taught by an expert how to use it & saw the effect on babies, I LOVED using it. We use flexible tape & tear a piece off the roll & then tear that piece in 1/2 lengthwise & position the tape across the tubing just above ur nipple/areola (above is relative to where the baby's mouth/nose are in relation to your breast). The baby takes the nipple/areola when u bring baby onto a deep latch & when baby is BF, the supplementation occurs at the same time as BF. Saves time, saves pain, saves latch, saves milk production (bc deeply latched baby is best at getting milk out & stimulating milk production)! We didn't boil it in the hospital; we used warm sudsy water to clean all the parts, air dred, & reused.

We had to train him to learn milk comes from the breast. He would latch and just want for milk to flow and wouldn’t work for milk. He would get so frustrated at the breast because he was accustomed to the quick milk flow at the bottle instead of eliciting a let down at the breast. I pumped milk and hooked this up, latched my son and immediately pushed milk into his mouth. Then he sucked and got milk from the SNS and breast. Within 1-2 weeks, he was transferring 5oz from the breast without the SNS! Truly saved my nursing journey by helping my son learn how to suckle at the breast instead of bottle. My milk supply also increased due to increased nipple stimulation!! Quality is good, takes practice. Get some good medical tape to use with it. I stored it in the fridge between feeds and cleaned every few uses. Just be careful to clean well because the fat in breast milk can clog it. Used several times without issue!

**Q: Can you use with with the nipple guard?**
A: Yes I used it with the Medela nipple shield, I would put the tube under the shield and tape it in place.

**Q: Does the milk only come down the tube when the baby sucks or does it come out on its own?**
A: It can come out on its own, but it is very slow since the tube is so small- so baby sucking does most the work

**Q: why does this say "disposable"? I already have the medela bottles with me**
A: This version is only meant for short term supplementation, say a week or so. The tubing won't hold up to dozens of washings and sterilizations and use. I've seen them come loose from the tip, tube get crushed from being turned "off" and sometimes the tube just breaks. I'm an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) and an RLC (Registered Lactation Consultant) and I've found these are great for short term use, or to help a mom find out if this method works for her. She will need the larger full size SNS for long term supplementation. It is sturdier and it has 3 different sizes of tubes and each set has two tubes so mom can set up both breasts at once.

A: I don't know if it *works* but the Gerber bottles do fit the cap properly.

I have a medical condition that prevents me from making a full milk supply. This device is what has made nursing at all possible for me. I have used it with all 5 of my babies. It is not easy to use at first, but with practice, it gets easier. I would recommend getting the baby to the breast before s/he is crying, so that you can both be more patient. I would also recommend having a lactation consultant that is VERY familiar with this teach you how to use it. The tube has to be in the exact right place to work. I have found that it works better than the full size SNS and is less cumbersome to use. I also break off the clip that comes with it and string the black ring around some elastic. Then I tie the elastic to make a necklace that slides easily over my head and wear it around my neck. That also makes it less cumbersome. You will also need a roll of first aid paper tape to tape the tube to your breast. This only comes with one strip. I will say that it is easier for bigger babies to use. My last one was 9 and 1/2 lbs and he did great with it. But there were still times that I had to latch him on 3 or 4 times before we got the tube right. Again it is best to start the feeding during the early hunger signs like sucking rather than crying. I use this for the first 2 weeks after birth when you should be in bed anyway, then I switch over to nursing and topping off with a bottle when I have to get up and start being mom to everyone again. I love this product and am so grateful that it exists because I would never have been able to get my babies hooked on nursing without it.
