Our cat used to kill them and apparently they knew she had now departed. We tried gentle ways (wind chimes, stamping about like idiots, things that made a noise), and then nasty means (traps, a drop of diesel buried in a container) and nothing worked. When I put this stuff down we had over 16 hills. Within a week we had over 30. It would seem, the stuff was working and the moles were desperately shuffling about looking for food that didn't taste horrible. I put more down, nervously, and thankfully another week later they seemed to have buggered off. I took my eye off the ball a month later we had two new hills, but put more down and they left once again. Since then it has been two months and we have seen no activity at all. In the meantime I use tall bamboo canes with upside down empty plastic fruit juice bottles on top. I stuffed the end of the canes down the mole holes.
