Setup was very easy; just plug it in and set the frequency. Depending on the frequency setting, you can hear a faint ultrasonic sound on settings 1 and 2, which I think would be very loud for rodents. I purchased this for tenants in a rental unit so I set it at level 3 so it's not audible to the human ear but hopefully strong enough to be effective.
