There isn't much 3d out of the screen, but the depth is really good and the car race to the first key is one of the best 3d experiences I have seen in a movie. I have an xgimi aura ultra-short throw projector - with a 110" screen size - so not sure how this would look on a smaller screen / tv. Don’t know anything about the book so can’t make any comparison. As a film it was fast paced and kept my attention throughout. Overall effects and 3D were excellent and overall a hugely enjoyable film.
