Easy Anglo 1-2-3: A Beginner's Guide to the Anglo Concertina

I have several books for beginners on anglo concertina (Colin Sherbourne, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne) but find this to be easily the best. It goes gradually without being patronisingly simple and has a clear system of notation and introduces chords gradually. The other books mentioned have either a complicated notation and/or introduce alternative fingering too soon. I would suggest Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne's book as a second book to review and develop on Gary Coover's book. Coover has also written books on the concertina playing of well-known concertinists such as John Kirkpatrick and Scan Tester. The concertina is a fascinating instrument, very portable and capable of different genres (the English concertina is known as a classical instrument as well as more folky pieces.) The only drawback is the cost - they are not cheap (approaching £1000 for quality!)

Illustrates correct choice of buttons to play scales and tunes. Much info on playing in C but I play mainly D and G

As someone with basically no prior musical experience, this book is really helpful. The tablature helps with reading the music notes and I can now play a few of the simpler tunes. I'm looking forward to working my way through all the songs :)

Easy to understand

Just right for a L plated concertina player, gets you going straight away with a c scale and chord then little fills which sound good and after a few pages into well known songs. If you don't read music then the authors tab system mates well enough with the music score. Enough pages to whet the appetite and and start the journey well on. Good price to including postage so very pleased. Mention was made that this book could have a cd accompaniment but most of the book songs can be found on Utube posted by the author himself (angloconc) which is an ever better compliment to this book and also keeps the price down.

Good but a word of caution to anyone starting out. Get one system to learn from first I bought a number of these books after I had bought another book by a different author as you would expect they have different styles or methods of teaching and they are just different enough to confuse if you try and learn from a few different sources at the beginning. Great though can get a tune out of it now.

I bought several books to get me going on the concertina and have so far found this one the best in terms of the tunes in the book (more familiar to me so easier to learn) and the entabulation system is by far the simplest for me. I can already read music but you really need a system with the push-pull nature of the instrument and his seems the most complementary to "normal" music. Everyone will be different in what works for them though.

Great book to get me started learning the concertina - use of PDQ codes to take you to video clips of tunes being played is very handy.

So you've acquired a concertina and are trying to decide which beginner's book to buy. Without having the books in front of you, it might be difficult figuring out which intro anglo concertina book is the best choice. This is a solid, well-written book, and all the other ones are comparatively terrible for one reason or another. For the sake of comparison: Mick Bramich's Absolute Beginners' Concertina-- Seems to use a bizarre tab system, is REALLY short, and seems to waste a lot of time on information that would have been useful when it was published but now can be easily found on wikipedia. Bob Kail's Best Concertina Method Yet-- as others have stated, this is a very bare bones collection of songs and exercises. It's cheap and would be a great SUPPLEMENT to Coover's book, but don't make it your primary. Mel Bay's Deluxe Concertina Book by Frank Converse-- this has all the problems that old school Mel Bay methods tend to have (too long on simple tunes, boring tunes, very little explanation for anything tricky written with the assumption you'll have a teacher, etc) with none of the benefits (being comprehensive). Like Kail's book, it would be worth playing through when you've completed Coover's book (there are some interesting chord-heavy pieces in the back), but this is a rough place to start. In contrast to all of the above, Coover's book has easy to read, modern diagrams, lots of explanation without being overly patronizing, and covers considerably more ground than the other books. It's the only one of the books I've mentioned here that covers the top row of the 30 button. It seems like every concertina book uses its own variation on tab, so at least Coover's book is easy to read! If you can already read music and have played another instrument, it's mostly just a matter of getting used to the layout (major triad on push, other notes on pull...) and Coover's tab is supportive and doesn't seem like something you'll become dependent on. Get this one first, and then skim the other ones when you're done with it.

Gary Coover does some good work for the concertina community. This book is perfect for a beginner such as myself to progressively get accustomed to the concertina and the tab format is very simple and useful to me. As well, the QR code links to youtube videos showing Gary playing the songs are brilliant.

La parte tecnica è insufficiente. Niente in più di quanto si trova su parecchi siti (a gratis). Solo con questo manuale la vedo dura gestire lo strumento in modo accettabile. Per la parte degli spartiti niente di speciale. Si trova molto molto di più in rete sempre gratuito.
