The two halves pull apart easily, but the magnets are strong enough that I feel comfortable they won't separate when I don't want them to. Like several other reviewers have said, it does tend to make your keys stick together if they are in your pocket, etc. However, I came up with a solution for that! I had the keys that were sticking redone in brass and replaced the key loops with titanium ones. Brass and titanium are not magnetic.
