Founded in Oporto in 1820 by William & John Graham, the company has developed over time an unmatched reputation as one of the greatest names in Port. This legacy continues in the hands of the Symington family, owners of Graham’s since 1970, as a reflection of their dedication to making outstandingly good Ports through five generations. Six Grapes is named after the symbol traditionally used to mark barrels containing the highest quality wine from Graham’s Douro Valley quintas. More than a century ago, the motif first appeared on a bottle and since then it has become one of the most iconic brands in the Port trade. The first records of the name Six Grapes being used as a wine brand as sed to a barrel code date back to the first decade of the twentieth century. At the time, most Port was shipped to customers in barrel and bottled at destination. By then a number of leading shippers registered names for their own proprietary blends, and Graham chose ‘Six Grapes’ for the rich, fruit forward blend of young wines that had originally been earmarked to become Graham’s Vintage but which had not been included in the final Vintage blend. When the luxury passenger liner ‘Queen Mary’ made her maiden voyage across the Atlantic in 1936, Six Grapes was proudly featured on the First Class menu. We commemorated this historical landmark by ensuring that Six Grapes was served at the first Dinner of the maiden voyage of the ‘Queen Mary II’ in 2004. Sourced from Graham’s five ain vineyards, Six Grapes is produced using the same vineyard parcels and winemaking techniques (such as fermentation in single variety batches, and treading in modern lagares) as Graham’s Vintage Port, and is selected from among the wines deemed to be potential candidates for bottling as Graham’s most prestigious wine. Known for its remarkable quality, finesse and elegance, it is full-bodied, with rich black fruit on the palate, and fragrant blackberry aromas. Bottled young in order to retain its freshness and characteristic opulence, Six Grapes is typically aged for between one and two years in seasoned wooden casks. Ready to drink without the need for further decanting, Graham’s Six Grapes is perfect on its own or as an accompaniment to desserts, cheese, or a simple piece of dark chocolate. Six Grapes can be left open for several weeks and is best served slightly cool, between 12 and 16 degree Celsius.
