Review: Works as a drop-in plate. Very good, but some points to note - I needed a plate base for my shoulder rig that would be compatible with Manfrotto 501 plates. The Niceyrig appealed as it's shorter than the standard Manfrotto and other copy plates, so can be left more easily on the base of of my 80D, while still fitting easily into my camera bag. As a photographer moving to video, I've used the compact Manfrotto RC2 plates for many years, so the longer video plates (which allow balancing of the camera on a fluid head), have taken some getting used to. The Niceyrig plate is very well machined (not cast) and matches the width of the Manfrotto plate well - this means that when using the Niceyrig plate in my Manfrotto 701 head, the head's locking lever travels about the same distance as when locking the original plate; this is important as the lever isn't adjustable, so a smaller plate wouldn't lock in place as there's a stop for the lever on the head. Because the Niceyrig plate is shorter than the OE plate, when first pushing into the 701 head it latches only 2/3s of the way in; it'll lock, but it sits out of the head. However, push the head's locking pin in again, and the Niceyrig plate goes all the way into the head. If you left the locking lever undone, while the plate could drop back, it'll still stop before falling out. So while it feels odd at first, the plate does work fine with the Manfrotto head. The limitation is that, because it's not as long as the standard Manfotto plate, it's not quite as adjustable for position; this is less of a problem with a smaller DSLR on a head, but I have the original Manfrotto plate on the bottom of my rig to allow adjustability there – with the extra weight, balancing is important to stop the head drooping back or forward. The Manfrotto plate also works with the Niceyrig base – it slides in and latches fine, and while there isn't a stopper at the front edge of the base, the latching pin on mine just catches the edge of the back of the old 701 plate (handy, as you can press the button and slide the plate out of the front if you wish – something you can't do with the Manfrotto head). If you're looking for a base to use mainly with Manfrotto plates, and don't need a drop-in facility, I'd go with the more expensive Manfrotto 577 original, but if you're using this base an a rig, where it'll mainly take the Niceyrig plate, it's an excellent solution. The base is well made, and importantly for some, it can be used as a drop-in system – just wind the locking lever out, and the plate can be dropped in from above. The Niceyrig's base has an adjustable locking lever, so if you find it fouls on what it's mounted too, you can pull the lever out and reposition it before tightening or loosening. With the camera on the Niceyrig plate in the base, the locking lever just clears the bottom of the camera, making it easier to tighten. Sliding the Niceyrig plate into its own base or the Manfrotto head is a little less smooth than the Manfrotto original, but it still works well and I'm confident in its security. The security catch is a small Allen set-screw in a sprung button – this is loose when you get it, but if you tighten it down the button won't work. If you leave it loose, it'll likely eventually fall out, firing the pin out and getting lost; it's important to take out the set-screw and apply a little threadlock. If you don't have any (it's cheap), you could use a touch of superglue, but be careful you don't end up glueing the sliding pin. I can now easily fix my camera to my shoulder rig, then quickly swap it out onto my other tripods or slider. When buying, I was considering the Smallrig version, which is more expensive, and doesn't come with a plate, especially as there were no reviews for this product; in the end the Niceyrig was the best option for my needs, better even than the Manfrotto 577 thanks to the fact I can use it as a drop-in base, and because the plate is a little smaller. It'd be handy if Niceyrig sold the plates on their own, so I could fit the same to my second DSLR, but the complete pack is still a good price.
Review: GREAT - can recommend this got me out of a fix good strong bit of kit
