An honourable samurai takes the blame for murder to protect his clan but is betrayed fights for his honor in this breathtaking action spectacleTo protect his clan, an honourable samurai (Raizo Ichikawa, Shinobi) takes the blame for a murder committed by one of his fellows. He is promised a safe return after one year in exile, but this vow is broken and he becomes a fugitive chased by his own clansmen. Disillusioned by the bushido code of honour, he realises there are only two ways out: vengeance or death. From director Tokuzo Tanaka (The Snow Woman), a former assistant to Akira Kurosawa, this cruel jidaigeki stands alongside such notable works of the genre as Harakiri and Sword of Doom with its classic mix of honour codes and samurai action. Beautifully filmed in black and white 'scope with thrilling set pieces, The Betrayal features one of the most breathtaking finales in all of samurai cinema.Bonus MaterialsHigh-Definition digital transfer by KadokawaUncompressed mono PCM audioSelect-scene audio commentary by Japanese film historian Tom Mes (2025)Visual essay by film critic Philip Kemp, comparing The Betrayal with the original Orochi the Serpent (2025)Visual essay on director Tokuzo Tanaka by Tom Mes (2025)New English subtitle translationReversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Time TomorrowLimited edition booklet featuring new writing by Alain SilverLimited edition of 3000 copies, presented in full-height Scanavo packaging with removable OBI strip leaving packaging free of certificates and markingsCast & CrewActors: Raizo Ichikawa Kaoru Yachigusa Shiho FujimuraDirector: Tokuzo Tanaka Review: No good deed goes unpunished. - The always intense Raizรด Ichikawa plays a samurai retainer who gets royally screwed by fate as well as his master after simply obeying orders. He loses his good name and his fiancee and, because this is a classic chambara, the obvious path for Raizรด is to kill everyone. And I mean EVERYONE. Fantastic film!
Fantastic! Radiance continues to release great Japanese movies!

Always a pleasure to find a new favoret, with one of the most cathartic sword fight showdowns in the genre, and perhaps even in cinema. It brings together something like the realism of Twlight Samurai with the mayhem of Kill Bill.

A big fan of ichikawa raizo, I'm happy to see this get a UK Blu-ray release. Radiance movies are releasing some wonderful Japanese movies. Unfortunately this disc release has audio errors, Radiance Films has suspended sales and is offering a replacement program for affected discs.
