Pentel Graphgear 1000 Mechanical Drafting Pencil 0.3mm Brown (PG1013)

I have used many drafting pencils (Rotring, other Pentels), but the GraphGear 1000 is my favorite for carrying around. This is my husband’s pencil. He’s a field inspector and needs something robust that can handle field work. He says he has dropped it multiple times on concrete and it has not even dented. It write very smoothly and it’s smudged resistant. He says it’s comfortable to hold on to. Additionally, he tends to press hard and often breaks the graphite on other pencils. This one hasn’t broken yet, not once. My daughter presses hard just like her daddy so he bought her the pink one and she loves it too - she hasn’t broken the graphite yet either! They’re both very happy with this pencil and have already purchased extra ones.

Have owned a number of these over the years. Great quality, durable, nice looking and like the safety feature of retractable lead tip. They come in variety of (lead) widths but prefer the bigger .9 mm as I enjoy the writing experience of softer, darker more breakable leads. Highly recommend.

The pencil has a good weight to it but isn’t super heavy. Feels very sturdy and high quality. I love writing with it and the grip is not as abrasive as other pencils.

I'm someone that previously used the cheap throwaway plastic pencils and wooden pencils. Between the two, I preferred wooden pencils. Something about the weight and feel of a wooden pencil appeals to me plus I can use the eraser and not worry about it wearing about and having to buy expensive refills. You just throw it away and at pennies per pencil it was more economical to use wooden pencils. The only downside to wooden pencils is the constant sharpening. I like a very fine point and this is what made me gravitate to mechanical pencils. The cheap Bic mechanical pencils were actually pretty good. They provided a finer point and were lightweight. After using exclusively cheap Bic mechanical pencils I began to look at what else was out there and I came across the more expensive brands pencils and the more niche lead widths. It was then that I splurged and spent over $100 in various pencils and lead widths. Some of the ones I purchased were the Pentel Graphgear 1,000 0.7mm, 0.5mm, 0.4mm, and 0.3mm. I find the Graphgear 1,000 to be heavy but not as heavy as it might look in the pictures. I found the 0.7mm to be too wide when the lead ovals. It looks great but this pencil isn't made for writing long essays. It's more suited to working out math problems which is what I frequently find myself doing. The 0.4mm Graphgear 1,000 is, in my opinion, the best of all the Graphgear 1,000 models. This width has the strength of 0.5mm but has a finer point and the weight of the pencil means you have to apply very little pressure to make very visible markings on paper. I have to perform many calculations for calculus quizzes, homework,notes, in-class pop quizzes, and exams and was always finding myself running out of room. This pencil changed that. This pencil isn't without it's drawbacks. It's an aluminum pencil and while it's light, it's not as light as a wooden pencil or your Bic mechanical pencils you can buy at the grocery store. This pencil is best for working out math problems or for drawing schematics. This is not something you want to use to writing an essay or to take notes on your professor's biology lecture. It's weight will begin to cause cramping after a page or two of notes. This width is also not for the heavy handed. If you like to put a lot of force into the paper when you write you will break the lead. It's much much stronger than 0.3mm (you need to have an angel's touch if you plan on using 0.3mm) but will still snap. For those of you I would recommend 0.7mm or 0.9 in the Graphgear 1,000. If you want a great all-around pencil, I would recommend the Graphgear 500 in your preferred lead width. That pencil is extremely lightweight. Maybe just a hair heavier than a Ticonderoga wooden pencil but no more than that. If you can spare a few more dollars please treat yourself to the Graphgear 800 in your preferred width. The Graphgear 800 has a better grip than the 1,000 and 500 but is heavier than the 500 but it's my opinion that it's build quality is up to par with the 1,000 and superior to the 500 model. The only downside is neither the 500 or 800 models come in 0.4mm but most of you would probably be fine with the 0.5mm offerings. I am personally really attached to 0.4mm and that means that I have limited offerings in lead hardness. I currently use HB and B lead but most of you guys would be better served by 0.5mm if you are picky about lead hardness. You can get 0.5mm lead from as soft as 2B to as hard as 2H and everything in between, not to mention that 0.5mm lead is way cheaper.

When it comes to writing tools, I never would have thought that I would spend $12 for a single pencil and like it so much that I would spend another $12 on the version with the thicker lead. That said, the Pentel Graph Gear 1000 Mechanical Drafting Pencil is my favorite pencil and works flawlessly at dispensing lead so I can write and draw with it. The pencil is simple, stylish, and works very well. Lead is dispensed smoothly and stays firmly in place when you write. You can retract the lead back into your pencil by either clicking and holding the metal button on top like most mechanical pencils, or you can retract the entire metal tip with the lead set in place by pressing the clip that normally holds a pen/pencil at the top of your pocket. The pencil feels very durable and while it's not entirely made of metal (the inner workings are made of plastic) it still has a substantial look and feel. I've owned the 0.5mm pencil since February 2020, ended up purchasing a second 0.5mm because my daughter loved my pencil so much she practically stole it from me, and now I've purchased the 0.7mm pencil since I love the pencil so much and needed something that draws slightly thicker lines. All of the pencils work really well and can take the appropriate lead in the corresponding sizes. I haven't had any issues with any of the pencils and I'm already considering getting the other sizes, just so I can draw all the lines in varying thicknesses. It's a tool I have no regrets about paying so much for, and something I will probably purchase for friends' kids as gifts as they get older.

Excellent pencil! Robust! I love it's weight that makes it sit comfortable in my hand! Equipped with a clever mechanism to protect the nib and the lead. I started with 0.3 and I have now the 0.9, the 0.5, and got even this 0.7

In short: Fulfils all criteria to guarantee an excellent product experience. Looks: I have lost track of how many years I have had mine (best part of a decade now). They still look the business and are often asked about by my clients whilst I am using them. One was even stolen, so I suppose that makes them quite desirable. Construction: The retractable tip is just perfect. It has a slight springiness to it that not only cushions the writing/drawing experience, but also helps avoid lead breakages, although the modern hi-poly' refills are pretty good in their own right. Made principally of plastic and aluminium, it is light yet very robust. The combination of a knurled section and rubber grip is perfect - no readjustment or sweaty finger problems. There are no fancy gears that turn the lead around (as advertised by other products) neither have I ever thought to myself that I need one of those - one less unnecessary mechanism that can go wrong = minimalism = long-lasting = happy owner. Use: Always works well, very easy to carry around (very light). Solid enough construction to withstand severe punishment - mine has been submerged in water for ~3 days (flood while I was away) & dropped from a height of over 10m (~30ft) - accidentally dropped in the space between staircase - which obliterated the lead refills inside but the pen works just fine. If it was the cheaper plastics varieties of mechanical pencils then they would not have survived. I'm also sure that some of the more expensive varieties will not be able to boast this. Even if it did stop working, replacing them is not going to be too painful. As testament to how well these have worked, I now have 3 varieties of these that take different refill sizes, as well as a spare 0.5mm as my all-rounder when I have to jot down or explain anything on the go. The oldest one is pushing a decade in age and looks/works like new. [For the astute fans out there: yes, they did make minor changes in their construction over the years, but not to any detriment] Conclusion: I have never been let down, only pleasantly surprised. I would highly recommend this over any other product I have tried (including comparisons against other brands that are >4x more expensive). A fantastic product that offers excellent value and many years of great service. This product has never disappointed me and I'm certain that most will agree once they have had the pleasure of using it.

The quality is good. Its slightly on the heavier side with metal and all. Nib goes in when u click the clip so it doesn't prick us accidentally. Nice Lineweight. Good grip. Suitable for sketching. Always Love japanese products. Rarely ever goes wrong.
