You attach an aerator line to the inside, and that's the only thing you need. The air bubbles oxygenate the water while they also work to draw water through the sponge. All the muck that usually accumulates pretty quickly in my tank was drawn in, and the sponge works to break it all down naturally, which is actually healthier for my fish and plants. And no babies were harmed by this little device. it's gentle, but effective. And the best part is that you do not have to buy filters! Just rinse and squeeze the sponge under room-temp water for a moment and you're done. I'm definitely going to replace my old money-devouring filters in my 55 gallon tank with some like this. Do an online search and you will quickly discover that you can buy the PRO version of the Hydro IV Sponge Filter from another highly reputable source for less money and without the ridiculous $5.99 shipping fee. **Q: The reviews are conflicting - I see some people mention these are pro filters with the reticulated sponge while others mention they are. What is it?** A: these are NOT the pro version; those are not sold on Amazon for obvious reasons by the manufacturer these sponge filters would be the equivalent of the blue or white sponge mat filters used for canisters but e bit finer pores. **Q: will the top lift tube fit an Aqua Clear 20 or 40 Powerhead intake?** A: The Hydro Sponge uses a standard 1" lift tube for all size sponges, exactly the same size used on most under gravel filters. I checked reviews on Amazon for the Aqua Clear 20, and many users report using the Aqua Clear to power their under gravel filter, so I believe the Aqua Clear powerhead would also fit on a Hydro Sponge. I use the Hydro Sponge V "Pro", which uses a special reticulated sponge which resists clogging. The standard filters (non-Pro) have a finer pore structure, so need to be cleaned more often (how often depends on how dirty your fish are, but monthly would be a good place to start). The same company also makes "Filter Max" filters which use the same sponges, but have plastic elbows and several adapters to fit a wider range of powerheads and other water pumps. We tried a hang on back, and the current was just too strong. We tried an internal filter and not only did it raise the water temperature substantially, but just didn't work very well. At the advice of several members of a salamander forum, I ordered this filter and couldn't be happier. It's quiet, much more effective than the other filters we've tried, and oxygenates the water without creating harsh currents and/or water flow. Set up was a breeze and our caudata larvae are already much more active and spend a lot of time out in the open now that the water is so calm. The fact that this filter keeps the water crystal clear also makes viewing them much easier. So whether you've got fish fry, amphibian larva, or something that just needs peaceful water conditions, I'd definitely recommend this product.
