Luma Comfort Clear Ice Cube Maker Machine | First Cubes in 15 Minutes, 40 lbs. of Ice in 24 Hours | Countertop Portable Design in Stainless Steel

I purchased this in June 2017 and I absolutely love it. We have a lot of large parties at our house and this little machine has kept up with all our needs. I do not use it on a daily bases so I am not sure how it would hold up to that kind of use. I was hesitant to purchase this at first due to other reviews but I am glad I went with my gut instinct. If you do go ahead with this machine be sure to let it sit for at least a few hours before turning it on. This will let the coolant settle and will produce better ice with less problems in the beginning. I let mine sit for 24 hours before using it. Also, I always press and hold the on button for at least 15 seconds before starting my ice making. In my opinion, this creates the thickest and best ice. I have tried it by just pressing the on button and letting the machine do it's thing. This way also makes good ice but not as thick. I have even run this machine for two days straight to make ice to use in our coolers for the parties, it works but I have a hard time keeping the ice frozen due to not having a spare freezer or room in mine. I would say the specs are right on and produces around 28 lbs of ice per day. I have tried a few different things to get more ice out of it in a day but with no prevail. I use tap water to make the ice and clean it with white vinegar and water when I know I won't use it for a while. It makes perfectly clear ice for me. I only had a problem with fog with first few batches when I first got the machine and that's because I didn't clean it properly when I first opened it up. The drain is on the back end of the machine and it allows all the water from the bottom ice storage to drain. After contacting customer service (whom are extremely helpful and will even call you back if they don't know the answer) explained the machine has to be at least plugged in to drain the top water storage. The Luma Comfort works perfect for my needs and I am sure you will be very happy with your purchase if you choose this ice machine.

I really like this ice maker for the one month I have had it. I give it only 4 stars because I haven't had it long enough to have experienced any problems keeping it clean or to evaluate possible reliability problems. So far it does what I wanted it to do. I also agree with all previous comments. The cubes are smaller than I would prefer and they do have holes in them. But the unit is compact, reasonably attractive as an appliance and produces acceptable ice. I haven't owned any previous stand alone ice makers but I find the quality of the ice acceptable as a substitute for the ice my refrigerator unit (no longer working) used to produce. I would say the quantity of ice produced is adequate for either a couple or even a family of four. Ideally you would store the ice made in a freezer and only use the IM200SS periodically. It does make some noise when the compressor is operating so placing it in a bedroom might not be advisable. But in a kitchen or living room it shouldn't matter. UPDATE 11/17/2014 I've had this ice maker for a year now and I'm lowering the rating I give it from four stars to only two. At the moment it is still making acceptable ice but there have been problems. The first was that a brown scum would accumulate in the area under the ice bucket. I assumed that some metallic part in the ice maker was rusting but it may be something else though I can't imagine what that would be. I cleaned that tank. Oddly the ice itself never seemed to be affected (no odd taste.) Then it began making ice that was too thick to eject into the bucket. I turned it off and allowed it to reach room temperature and then only partly filled the water reserve tank. That fixed that problem. Next the controller that limits the amount of water from the reserve each ice making cycle stopped working and all the water in the water reserve tank would flow into the tank under the ice bucket and flood the ice. Not good. Again I even more severely limited the amount of water I would put into the water reserve tank and also contrived to raise the ice bucket about an inch using small button magnets attached under the ice bucket to adjust the height. This last so I could use more water and not have to refill the tank as often. But about two months ago I discovered that the limiter problem has now cured itself (at least for the time being.) Now only the brown scum and thick ice problems remain but they are only intermittent. Still, on balance, I am glad I bought this system because the ice it makes has always been very good. I appreciate that building an ice making machine this compact is challenging. But no more than two stars for this one. UPDATE 7/17/2017 The problem of keeping the unit clean became progressively more difficult. The brown scum continued to appear and must be rust from some part of the system that should be made of stainless steel. At times the residue in the bottom of the ice reservoir (that is, below the ice bucket) would take on an oily/slimy feel. I just wish they had put more thought into the materials that were in contact with the water. I finally sent the unit to the trash bin about a month ago. In the preceding four months I was needing to clean the unit every two weeks or so. And, although my taste buds aren't what they used to be, I believe I could detect an odd taste to the ice. I started to worry whether I was doing damage to myself using the ice. That together with the difficulty of keeping it clean led me to dispose of the unit. Final conclusion - if you are willing to buy a new unit every couple of years this is the unit for you as initially I found the ice to be of high quality. But I would hope for more from such an appliance, maybe five years between replacement. So I've lowered the rating to (now) one star.

The ice maker works great and makes ice fast. It’s easy to use even without the manual, quiet, and doesn’t take up much space. The ice comes out solid and consistent. Definitely worth buying and perfect for everyday use. The quality of the machine seems very durable.

There's more to like about this machine than not. I've used it about 3 weeks, and so far, it is a keeper. It makes CLEAR ice, and a lot of it. It's reasonably quiet. It's efficient with water use. The ice keeps well in the maker. I wish it made individual cubes, but mine simply will not. The cubes are all connected by a sheet of thin ice. I use a table knife handle to tap the block vigorously, and the cubes break up easily into small blocks of 1-to-3 cubes. I use bottled spring water, as suggested, and the machine remains clean and efficient. Mine is beginning to "bark" periodically, and I suspect the pump shaft is seizing intermittently during the ice making cycle. If so, this will require warranty repair. I had a problem with ice being too thick initially, got a prompt and courteous reply from company representative. YES, I would highly recommend this machine. You cannot, IMO, get a clear ice cube maker of this quality anywhere near this price point.

Have had a month or so but has done all that said it would - only 2 of us in the household - Our fridge ice maker "died" couple years ago so we were purchasing bags of ice & filling the bin as need; being the year round ice tea fanatic, take a jug with me every time leave house... this was a pain - #1, remembering to buy extra bag; #2, cost keeps rising.. Read up on different brands, ratings, pros and cons & on Prime Day did it for us, Luna was 1st on my list! Usually run maker 1-2 times a week, bag up as becomes available, put in freezer. Like the larger cube option (of course not as big of cubes as store bought bags), clear ice is great, very quick to make ice after the 1st bin-full, and with the "insulated holding bin" doesn't immediately melt if I'm out of room when Bin full light comes on. It's very quiet, easy to set up and go. As stated, so far, it's great, maybe 6mos down the road it might not be but will revise this post if needed. Just saw the "Flavor" rating - there's none even with regular tap water - we are lucky to have great water where we are...

I've not had any of the problems that others have reported. I have owned this for 15 months now and use it continuously. Here are a few tips: I flush mine out with bleach water once a month. Otherwise, it grows a clear slimy substance that makes cloudy ice (yuck!). If you want thicker ice, turn the unit off, then hold the on/off button down for ten seconds. The five seconds suggested in the manual is too short and will not increase the thickness of the ice. Sometimes mine would suck air and refuse to drop more water. Mineral buildup around the screw that is under the ice bucket causes this. I just clean around the screw with a paper towel and more water drops at the next cycle. Occasionally melted ice overfills the area under the ice bucket, causing ice to melt as soon as it is produced. For a while I just scooped a bit of the water out to get it working again. A couple months ago I found a better solution. I got a stainless steel fender washer and put it behind the screw under the ice bucket. I used a bit of plumbers putty on the back side to keep water from leaking around it. Now the water fill stops at the washer and this problem has gone away. If the ice gets really thin, the condenser coils probably need the dust blown out. Air is pulled through the front, so you cannot see the contamination from the back. I needed to clean mine out after a year. I only use RO water in mine now. The salt in softened water makes the ice thinner and builds contamination around the fill sensor screw faster too. I empty all the water out about once a week. That keeps the ice clear. Clear ice makers flow the water over the cold plate and only the water freezes to the plate. The contaminants stay in the water, that is until there is so much contamination that it cannot do that anymore. Professional clear ice makers flush the recycled water periodically to keep the ice clear, but this one cannot do that.

The machine works as advertised, great ice, etc. and we've largely been pleased with its performance. We use it daily. However, the reserve tank is hard to fill (given our kitchen set up/sitting underneath cupboards) because access is in the back and the water needs to be poured from the top. The machine does not have a self-cleaning function so you have to clean both the front and back tanks manually; the back tank is very hard to clean because the top opening is small and the tank is fairly deep. These are annoyances but not deal breakers. The real problem, and what is prompting me to write this review, is that the machine has started making a horrible grinding noise 1 year after we bought it (purchased December 29, 2023; today is January 4, 2025). I have no idea how to fix this and we will no longer be able to use it. This is our second ice maker; the first one (Igloo) also stopped working after 1 year. So perhaps ice makers only have a 1-year life span.

After looking at portable units for clear ice, I finally crossed my fingers and ordered this unit based on plenty of reviews and the fact that they're all made in china.... Clean it thoroughly, and run plenty of ice before you make ice you're going to actually use. It has a strong 'made in china chemical smell' when you first unbox it. Reminds me of the little made in china dremel I got one year that actually stated you should wash your hands after handling it due to chemicals used in manufacturing.... When I say clean thoroughly, I mean getting your hands inside the water receptical to wipe it all out, etc. Q-tips worked for cleaning the freezing grid. Then make ice constantly for a day, I didn't run soapy water through the plumbing, by the second day it was fine to put in a drink. The pros: It makes clear ice, which looks great in your drink! (this is from water from the tap through a brita filter). For bigger cubes, hold down the power button and count to 10 when you turn it on. When it gets going , it drops a waffle of ice every 15 to 20 minutes. Comparing fridge ice maker ice (a new kenmore), ice from trays (brita water) and ice from the store, this ice tastes best. Odd that it tastes better than the brita tray water, but it does.... It also cranks out the ice fast enough that it's easy to make enough ice for two days in a evening (we go through ALOT of ice). I havn't done the math to see if it makes 28 pounds/day, I could care less if it meets the families requirements. Another thing that's nice is that the cubes are small enough to go into the ice maker bin in the door of the fridge and pass through the door dispenser, so clear ice from the freezer door. Very convenient and no wasted space by a sub-par freezer ice maker. The spare ice is in a bin to refill the door hopper as needed. Since it's not refridgerated, the ice bin is basically a cooler, let it make a couple waffles of ice, then remove the ice above those as it drops. This keeps the interior colder, and helps the ice form faster (the 'large cube' setting has the unit make ice 3minutes longer than 'small cube') The not so pros: It's loud. Not jet engine loud, but you'll notice when it shuts off. It throws a bit of heat. Not much surprise there, just be ready in the summer. It's large... Measure it out and make a form from a carbord box or something to see how it will dominate your countertop. Luckily we had space right next to the sink for it... It's portable yes, but it's heavy and bulky, so near the sink so you can drain it easily is best if you can fit it in. The ice cubes are wet and they will freeze into a solid pile of cubes in your freezer, have a ice pick or mallet handy lol. This isn't a fault of this unit, all these ice makers work that way, it's unavoidable. Stainless steel finish shows water spots and fingerprints like nothing I've seen before... The cons: First of all, Amazon sold out of these and I bought from Brookstone (via Amazon) since I didn't want to wait for Amazon to restock (yeah hindsight is 20/20 right?) Why is this a con? Because the unit stopped working a month and a half after we got it, and it cost 65$, yeah SIXTY FIVE dollars to ship it back to brookstone for an exchange. I'm never buying anything from Brookstone again. Ever. Never going to go to the local ups-store again either... But as I said, it stopped working a month an a half after we got it. It ran like a champ every other day until the 'add water' light came on and nothing else. Power cycle, everything in the tiny manual it comes with, no noise, no tripping of some internal switch (you hear a loud click when it starts, or you should). Since I could exchange it, I did, or I'd go at it with a hammer and pliers to see what was going on inside... It was missing the left front foot. Not a big deal? It showed how well it was manufactured. The foot didn't come off, it was never installed. The feet are held on by screws, and you could see the starter hole in the metal where no screw had ever been... The ice scoop they include is tiny, and the only thing it's really good for is scooping a little bit of dry cat food. It's that flimsy. The controls on the unit are pretty spartan... Yeah you can use one circuit board for multiple functions etc, but it's just cheap... Your two controls are the power cord, and a button to turn it on and off, and holding the button for a 10count to have it go to 'big ice mode' is just asking for trouble down the road.... The 'filters' (there's two, one in the water receptical and one in the bottom of the ice bin) will filter anything larger than a milimeter. That's not a filter in my book, that's a grate. And, there's a sticker on it that says that distilled water is not recommended. Um... Why? Misprint or it would foil thier mtbf? I'm not into fluid mechanics but I can't think of a reason why distilled water woudn't be good for a ice maker... And the "I can't say if this is a pro or a con": The new unit arrived, and the Stainless finish on the housing looks brighter than the other unit, it has all four feet, and it's working. I also noticed a little sensor tip in the bottom of the ice bin in the drain depression. I honestly can't recall if there was such a thing in the returned unit or not, but on the new unit, there is less water sitting at the bottom of the ice bin. The old unit would release water and fill the cooler to the bottom of the ice tray (maybe a inch or more of water). The new unit, there's half an inch or less of water in the bottom of the cooler. Is this a 'new' unit, and the first unit a 'several years old' unit dusted off for the Christmas buying season? I don't know, but I'll update this review if the new unit stops working. If it hadn't stopped working, I'd have given the first unit a 4star rating (missing a foot is just too careless to warrant 5stars no matter how good the ice tastes). If I'd gotten a unit that looks as good as the second unit and it didn't stop working, I'd give this a 5star rating. It works great when it works, and the ice is the best tasting ice we've had.

Unit was as described by vendor. Easy set up and use. Makes ice quickly and is clear and solid. Blocks break apart for better fit to your glass. Would certainly recommend this unit

Doesnt work

The ice this makes is the best I've ever had; clear, doesn't melt fast, and is make very quickly! The only problem I have with this ice maker is 3 months into ownership, the water pump is making a horrible sound like the bearings in it are seizing. I have only ever poured filtered Brita water into this machine and when not in use very meticulously cleaned it and let it dry. I've used it maybe 6 times this whole summer and this is how it chooses to die. I've seen in other reviews that the company doesn't ship to Canada officially, and this is true attempting to order parts (like a new water pump) directly from the manufacturers website where United States is the only country selectable. Newair, if you read this, please help us Canadians! Don't sell these in Canada if you cannot support them! I will happily upgrade this review to the 5 stars that it deserves if I can get a new water pump or a replacement unit shipped to me.
