## Description

Halloween Original Soundtrack - John Carpenter - When the new Halloween movie hits theaters in October 2018, it will have the distinction of being the first film in the series with creator John Carpenter's direct involvement since 1982's Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Carpenter serves on the new David Gordon Green-directed installment as an executive producer, a creative consultant, and, thrillingly, as a soundtrack composer, alongside his collaborators from his three recent solo albums, Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies. The new soundtrack pays homage to the classic Halloween score that Carpenter composed and recorded in 1978, when he forever changed the course of horror cinema and synthesizer music with his low-budget masterpiece. Several new versions of the iconic main theme serve as the pulse of Green's film, it's familiar 5/4 refrain stabbing through the soundtrack like the Shape's knife. The rest of the soundtrack is just as enthralling, incorporating everything from atmospheric synth whooshes to eerie piano-driven pieces to skittering electronic percussion. While the new score was made with a few more resources than Carpenter's famously shoestring original, it's musical spirit was preserved. "We wanted to honor the original Halloween soundtrack in terms of the sounds we used," Davies explained. "We used a lot of the Dave Smith OB-6, bowed guitar, Roland Juno, Korg, Roli, Moog, Roland System 1, Roland System 8, different guitar pedals, mellotron, and piano." Unlike the Lost Themes albums, where the composers wrote the soundtracks for imaginary movies, Halloween saw the Carpenters and Davies collaborating on music set to images for the first time. Though it marked a significant change from their previous creative process, the trio thrived under the constraints and tight deadlines that film scoring work demands. "Being limited by the length of time in scoring the sequence, we focused on the director's tempo, timing, and vision," Davies said. "He would tell us what he had in mind, how long the cue should be, what emotion he wanted, and we would take it from there. It's only the three of us, there is no elaborate system. We wrote, performed, and orchestrated everything." For John Carpenter, who reunited on the new film with original Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis, composing the score felt like a homecoming. Not only had he not worked on a Halloween movie in 35 years, he hadn't composed a soundtrack since his 2001 sci-fi thriller Ghosts of Mars. "It was great," Carpenter said of the experience. "It was transforming. It was not a movie I directed, so I had a lot of freedom in creating the score and getting into the director's head. I was proud to serve David Gordon Green's vision." For Cody Carpenter, John's son, and Davies, his godson, it was surreal to work on something that means so much to generations of fans, and that they grew up around. "It was an honor for us to be involved, and we are really happy to be a part of something that so many people are anticipating and excited about," Davies said. "Working together with both the director of the new Halloween and the creator of the original Halloween was really a fantastic experience."

Halloween A Classic Soundtrack That Will Still Scare You

*by J***S on Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2018*

I love movies but I have to admit that I've never been particularly fond of the horror movie genre but that does not mean I didn't watch the classics beginning with John Carpenter's 1978 horror classic Halloween the theme of Michael Myers to me was and still is very scary very haunting and most of all dark which is what always caught my undivided attention because of the way it was created simply by just using a piano its repetitive in nature but really helps the listener identify who Michael Myers is and at the same time establish the movie's tone. Before I ever considered purchasing this soundtrack Halloween the 20th anniversary edition I had discovered a remastered version of the original and by doing so I noticed apart from the main title theme that were only a few tracks that were really good while the others were just the same my reasoning for buying this gem of soundtrack was to prepare for the new movie coming out this October and what better way to begin the journey then to go back to the beginning to start up my Halloween collection being that this soundtrack was the most difficult soundtrack to find and brand new. However much like the original album the 20th anniversary edition even with additional music it sounds pretty much the same and not much in the way of new music but there is a difference because although the music is the same theres a really nice dose of dialogue here present on the album as well as having the original actors the late great Donald Pleasence and the scream queen herself Jamie Lee Curtis and many more and i love that aspect of the album it feels as if your listening to an audio book of the movie with the added music. For any of the new generation kids who don't know about John Carpenter's Halloween and history of what it took to make this movie this album makes for the perfect introduction heres a fun fact the movie suffered through its first premier opening to the general public from fans and critics alike the movie was slammed with a slew of negative reviews when is was shown without its original score and the film was deemed a failure because it wasn't scary critics remarked but horror director and composer John Carpenter quickly turned it around composed the music for the movie in just three days truly making the movie what it is today and the score still haunting and still until this day scaring us all giving us the heebie jeebies Mr sandman brought us a dream and and turned it into a nightmare when he gave us Michael Myers.

Hopefully this helps clear a few things up about this release.

I purchased the recent releases of Halloween (40th Anniversary) and Halloween II. Prior to the purchase I read a lot of mixed reviews regarding this release. This included a Youtube review where listener described what he was hearing as "not being remastered". This reissue is sourced from the sound stem of the actual Halloween print, meaning the sound as you hear it on the original Halloween movie. The sound was mixed to a single mono channel, no stereo separation. At the time stereo was not necessary in film. This means what you get is the original mix from 1978 that was made to be in the film, this is not something mixed separately with a "soundtrack release" in mind. A few years later the soundtrack was remixed and issued, it was a little different from what was in the film. In 1998 a 20th anniversary CD was issued, and from what I remember a lot of it was true to the original mix. That said, all things considered where the source comes from, I do enjoy this and think it sounds pretty good. It's not going to have the "full width" of a stereo recording, but nonetheless I still enjoy it. I really love the packaging, very creative, and while I don't normally like colored vinyl I do like that this is colored orange. As I mentioned I also picked up Halloween II. A lot of people have pointed out how great that sounds on vinyl, and I agree with them. I'd like to point out a big difference is that is a stereo recording intended as a soundtrack release, thus why it sounds "fuller" compared to this release.I do think this is a tad overpriced for what it is. I'd expect this price tag out of a double vinyl, but a single vinyl release seems a bit high. Even if the artwork is really great.EDIT: Listening to this more in depth, there ARE volume inconsistencies. Particularly noticeable on the track "Myers' House". Still like having this though!

This is John Carpenter at his best

Honestly I feel like John Carpenter in his old age is better than he’s ever been in terms of composing music. Because he really brought his A game with both the soundtrack for Halloween 2018 and Halloween kills. And I liked that he did the music with his son and his godson. I mean the Halloween theme in this is pretty good still sounds the same but it’s just a different version more modernized and upbeat. At the same time though I really dig the new music that he came up with I mean the Music is very haunting and quite memorable. But my favorite track on this album and in the entire movie is The Shape Hunts Allyson. So simple so catchy and very menacing. I will never forget when I first saw the movie when it came out and when I first heard this song in the scene where Allyson first sees Michael Myers he pops up and then she screams and runs for her life that scene gave me chills I will never forget it.
