Obviously, the quality of sound is better in the 1959 stereo recording than in the mono 1951. But the very end of the work -the last seven minutes- in the 1951 recording is the most exciting, orgiastic, I ever heard, more even than the excellent Boulez's first performance with the Cleveland Orchestra from 1969. The differences between the two Markevich versions are not radical, but enough to justify the idea. The great performers of Le sacre du printemps are legion: Boulez, Monteux, Stravinsky, Dorati, Fricsay, Muti, Rattle, Gergiev, Thomas, Dudamel, but at the top of this Olympus reigns Igor Markevich, a man who knew every note of the piece, so, that in 1949 he sent Stravinsky a list of mistakes he had noticed in the recently revised edition. Moreover, there's never for a moment any hint of routine reading of this classic of the modern orchestral repertoire. In short, an exceptional disc with a sole question: which is the bonus: the 1951 version or the 1959? ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ hard to find *by R***K on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 24, 2012* actually I boght this to a collector friend of mine, he is very happy, I thinks is a good investment ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sublime recording of Le Sacre ! *by H***A on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 7, 2005* To my mind there are just five superb and unbeatable recordings of Le Sacre du Prientemps each one with its own personality .The first one with Pierre Monteux , Boston Symphony dated from 1958 .The second performance belongs to Antal Dorati in a mono Mercury recording with the Minneapolis of the fifties .The third reading (my favorite one) is a very hard to find recording of Michael Tilson Thomas and the Boston Symphony of 1971 .The Fourth is a superb performance of Fricsay with Rias in the Fifties.And finally this one of Markevitch and the Philarmonia Orchestra .The trademark seal of this version is the pagan atmosphere , superb sonority and bitter disonances carefully underlined for this masterful conductor .In fact Markevitch was -together with Ernest Ansermet- a real pioneer champion playing almost his entire repertoire .
