Don't know if they were necessary but I loaded the drivers that came on the mini-CD. The mini-CD also includes a user's guide. I also received an email from the company that gave a few helpful hints and urging me to contact them if there were any problems whatsoever. So I have to give some special credit to the customer service department. I don't know that I'll ever need but they do show they care about the customer and it sounds like they really want the customer to be satisfied. BTW, I'm a gov't worker & needed the card so that I can more easily check my email at home or on the road. At first I was having issues getting it to work, but after a little trial and error with the DOD cert requests I managed to get it to work. Remember to install the driver 1st (inside the cardboard part of package), once that's done, then pug in the reader. Give it a few minutes to find the correct updates.
